Selena Gomez’s mom defends her frequent social media breaks

Selena Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey, has defended her daughter’s decision to take breaks from social media amidst criticism.

Teefey emphasized that Selena’s social media hiatuses vary in length depending on her needs at the time.

She mentioned that she herself can go without social media for a week and then catch up later.

“It’s just whatever she needs for that time period…I can go a week without looking at any social media, and then I’ll get on there and I’ll try to catch up…But it’s just whatever time Selena needs, she gives herself.”

Teefey discussed this matter while talking about Wondermind, a mental health network she and Selena co-founded to promote mental health awareness and support.

Selena has openly spoken about how excessive social media use affects her mental health negatively. She shared in a 2022 interview that taking a nearly five-year break from being online significantly improved her mental well-being.

Selena highlighted that although the internet has many positive aspects, she now relies on more personal connections for important news.

“It has changed my life completely. I am happier, I am more present, I connect more with people. I understand how powerful the internet is, and in so many ways it’s done the best things for the world…But for me, I get to my news that is actually important I get through people in my life.”
